Sex toy hygiene question

Hi Scarleteen team!

This might be a liiittle bit strange to ask, but I don't have anywhere else to ask this, so here we go!

A while ago, me and my boyfriend bought a dildo, because he wanted to experiment with anal play. But he found out that he doesn't like it, since the dildo turned out to be too big for him. The one time he used it, there was a condom placed on it and I also washed it with near-boiling water and soap multiple times afterwards.

My question is: would it be safe to use it for myself (vaginally), or could it give me an infection despite the fact it was cleaned? Alternatively, do you have any advice on how to clean it properly so that it becomes safe to use for me? I really don't wanna throw this thing out, it has a very nice shape and was quite pricey💔

Hi! I appreciate you being so careful and safe with this, as it's super important to make sure we only use clean toys for vaginal insertion. How safe it is for you to use after he used it depends on the material. Some materials are porous so bacteria can get trapped on them, while others aren't and are therefore easier to clean and generally safer to use. If it's 100% silicone, you should be able to boil it as well. Seeing as there was a condom on it the one time he used it, though, I would say as long as you have thoroughly cleaned it and there's no tears or scratches on it (or it isn't a porous material), then it's okay to use.
