Why is my vagina so small?

I’ve recently tried penetrating my vagina and I’ve gotten comfortable with just using one finger. My problem is, why is my vagina so small? I’m not lacking arousal and it doesn’t hurt at all but it just feels like all I can fit is one finger. And when I put the finger in, I feel like a hump at the front wall of my vagina, like there’s something in front of it kinda, is that normal? I’m worried because I want to engage sexually in the future and think I might not be able to.

Hi there, Doomstroyer

Don't worry, being able to only fit one finger right now does not mean your vagina is too small for insertive/PIV sex with a partner. It is really common for this to happen when you are just starting to explore insertion.

Something to keep in mind is that the vagina is not a static tube--it is elastic and muscular, and can change size. What you've noticed so far is the vagina in its contracted state, because there is nothing, or just your finger, inserted inside. It can relax and expand to create more space when necessary. Try to build up to using more fingers, slowing down when you notice any resistance or discomfort/pain.

Along with being aroused in the first place, using lube can help with this process. Do you think you could get access to that, if you wanted it? We'd be happy to answer any questions you have about this topic.

Could you describe this hump that you've noticed a bit more? Does it feel hard/firm under your fingers? How deep inside is it located, approximately?

It’s firm yes, it’s towards the top of my vag, like when I put my finger in all the way. Google says it’s my cervix but im not sure. Is google right?

Hi there,

that definitely sounds like it might be your cervix. You can find more about what it is and how it can feel to touch here: Innies & Outies: The Vagina, Clitoris, Uterus and More.
Fun fuct: the texture and even position of the cervix changes slightly during the menstrual cycle, frequently checking it and charting the changes is actually one of the ways some people track their cycles (more about that here: Get With the Flow: All About FAM

However, the bottom line here is that like google (or it’s AI, which I would not consider a good safe source of sex ed information at all), we aren’t healthcare professionals and we can’t examine you in the way they can. So if this is something that is worrying you or you just wanted to know for sure, you can absolutely schedule an appointment with a doctor about it, as regular ob/gyn visits are something you will need to start eventually anyway. Is that something you would want to do?

I want to add that where your cervix is in your vagina in terms of how close or far away it is from the opening varies based on where you are in your menstrual cycle. So, during your most fertile times, usually about mid-cycle, it will be pretty close to the opening like you seem to be describing. It also may be that while you're aroused, you're not aroused enough for it to pull further back at any time in your cycle.

What position you're doing this in can also matter, so you may see what happens when you try changing up how you'rer laying or sitting.

You say it doesn't hurt to put your fingers inside your vagina, but does it feel good? If not, then part of the issue may also be that your body isn't responding because what you're doing doesn't feel good.
